In October 1767 Chambers was commissioned to rebuild the South wing after builder, surveyor and architect Stiff Leadbetter died. He also took over Leabetter's jobs at the Duke's London home, Bedford House. The wing, including a new Library and Eating room was complete in 1770. The life of these costly works was to prove short: less than eighteen years later, the 5th Duke hired Henry Holland to gut the wing completely and rebuild the interiors in a more modern style.\r\n\r\nChambers was born in Sweden and died in London. He travelled widely, visiting China, and studied architecture at the Ecole des Arts, Paris, from 1749 and in Italy from 1750 to 1755.  Many of his drawings from this period are contained in his important 'Franco-Italian' album, held in the V&A.  Chambers moved to London in 1755 and published his influential Treatise on Civil Architecture in 1759.  Chambers demonstrated the breadth of his style in buildings such as Gower (later Carrington) House and Melbourne House, London, in such country houses as Duddingston, Scotland, and in the garden architecture he designed for Wilton House, Wiltshire, and at Kew Gardens. He became head of government building in 1782, and in this capacity built Somerset House, London.","physicalDescription":"Plan of the library ceiling at Woburn Abbey for the 4th Duke of Bedford.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Chambers, William","id":"A8236"},"association":{"text":"architect","id":"AAT24987"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"pen and ink","id":"x30618"},{"text":"pencil","id":"x30347"},{"text":"watercolour","id":"x33202"}],"techniques":[{"text":"drawing","id":"x32498"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Pen and ink, pencil and watercolour.","categories":[{"text":"Designs","id":"THES48968"}],"styles":[{"text":"neoclassical","id":"AAT21477"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2010EH9074","2006AV2344"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLE","id":"THES49657"},"free":"","case":"A","shelf":"229","box":"C"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"drawing (image-making)","id":"AAT54196"}],[{"text":"designs","id":"AAT102051"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1767","earliest":"1762-01-01","latest":"1771-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"693","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"468","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"the artist's sale: Christie's, 6 June 1811, part of lot 67 (bought by Molteno for 5 gns.); Sir Albert Richardson Collection; Christie's, London 30 November 1983, lot 12; The Clarendon Gallery.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Plan of the library ceiling at Woburn Abbey; William Chambers.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Harris 1970, p.253, pl.90."},{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Snodin Catalogue Number: 735"}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[{"text":"Woburn Abbey","id":"x44515"}],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["E.571-1985"],"accessionNumberNum":"571","accessionNumberPrefix":"E","accessionYear":1985,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-07","recordCreationDate":"2009-06-30","availableToBook":false}}
