For the former, wooden clamps with mirror-image carved designs are tied either side of folded cloth or paper, to exert great pressure, and then the clamped cloth is submerged in the dye. The parts of the fabric that are highly pressurized resist dye. \r\n\r\nPeter Ford has used a modified process in which paper is folded many t imes before tying and dipping. The most difficult part of the process is untying the tightly folded bundle while still wet, as the paper fibre is very fragile at this stage, but the paper must be opened up and spread flat while still wet, because the inks become adhesive as the paper dries out.","physicalDescription":"sheet of paper bearing multiple fold marks and covered with repeat pattern of irregular, translucent watercolour dye patterns in a variety of colours and hues, on a white ground.\r\nFord learned this process when at a conference in Banff, Canada, in 2005.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Ford, Peter","id":"A6747"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"x36960"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Ford, Peter","id":"A6747"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"itajime dyed paper","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2019LL3955"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLE","id":"THES49657"},"free":"","case":"MP","shelf":"131","box":"A"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"print","id":""}],[{"text":"endpapers","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"UK","id":"x29336"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"2005/6","earliest":"2005-01-01","latest":"2006-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Purchased through the Julie and Robert Breckman Print Fund","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"62","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"44","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"the orientation of the sheet is not crucial","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Decorative paper dyed with the Japanese 'itajime' dying technique by Peter Ford.
