People used them on their heads or shoulders or tied them around their hips.\r\nAt the end of the 18th century embroidery designs began to develop into rigid and heavily stylised borders for towels and napkins. The colours are strong and embroiderers used greater quantities of metal thread. The designs were always inventive. The colours in some 19th century embroideries were originally very bright but they have faded to pleasing pastel shades.","physicalDescription":"Kerchief, cotton embroidered with silk in double running stitch variations and combinations, musabak and square eyelets and with metal thread in double running stitch variations and combinations.\r\nThe repeated motif is a stylised scene: an irregualr bown shape may represent water (a lake or pond); on the far side is a central red tree (in blossom?). To either side of this is a building (a kiosk?) and a cypress tree.\r\nAll four sides have been hemmed and then trimmed with a metal thread lace in which a gold scallop alternates with a silver one.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"cotton yarn","id":"x30425"},{"text":"silk thread","id":"x30127"},{"text":"metal thread","id":"x30421"}],"techniques":[{"text":"weaving","id":"AAT53642"},{"text":"embroidering","id":"AAT53653"},{"text":"sewing","id":"AAT53658"},{"text":"lace making","id":"x30355"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Cotton, embroidered with silk and metal thread in double running stitch variations and combinations, musabak and square eyelets, and with metal thread in double running stitch variations and combinations","categories":[{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"},{"text":"Embroidery","id":"THES48960"},{"text":"Accessories","id":"THES48998"}],"styles":[{"text":"Ottoman","id":"AAT21614"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"MES","id":"THES48607"},"images":["2006AM0852","2018LE2922"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES306173"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Scarf or Kerchief","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Turkey","id":"x29225"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1800-1899","earliest":"1800-01-01","latest":"1899-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Mr Lionel Harris","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"86","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"82","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"A cotton kerchief embroidered with silk and metal thread, Turkey, 19th century \r\n","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"Marianne Ellis and Jennifer Wearden.
