It was ordered by the 8th Earl of Kintore for Keith Hall, Inverurie, in Scotland, and delivered in October 1850 by the makers, Jennens & Bettridge. This firm was the largest and best known maker of papier-mâché in Britain at the time. They manufactured their wares in Birmingham, but also kept a showroom in Halkin Street in West London. Papier-mâché makers often included well-known castles and stately homes in their decoration but this is clearly a special commission. In front of Keith Hall, we can see the figures of the Earl and Countess, together with their dogs Flush and Bruno.","physicalDescription":"A trestle form fire-screen, of wood and papier-mâché, the frame of Jacobean revival style, japanned in red and gold, inset with paste gems, the panel of the fire-screen pained with a landscape including Keith Hall, Inverurie, and showing the 8th Earl and Countess of Kintore walking with their dogs Flush and Bruno","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Jennens & Bettridge","id":"A9140"},"association":{"text":"makers","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"papier-mâché","id":"AAT14245"},{"text":"wood","id":"AAT11914"},{"text":"glass paste","id":"AAT10803"}],"techniques":[{"text":"painting","id":"x30598"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Wooden frame, with papier-mâché","categories":[{"text":"Furniture","id":"THES48948"},{"text":"Paintings","id":"THES48917"},{"text":"Scotland","id":"THES262877"}],"styles":[{"text":"Victorian","id":"AAT21232"},{"text":"Jacobean Revival","id":"AAT21196"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":["2006BD3697","2014HC8241"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES344853"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Firescreen","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Birmingham","id":"x28748"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"probably"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1850","earliest":"1850-01-01","latest":"1850-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"127.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"95","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"52.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"dimensions taken from departmental green catalogue\r\nChecked by FC / LW 26.1.10","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Jennens & Bettridge","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Impressed on the reverse of the screen"}],"objectHistory":"Made for the Earl of Kintore, for Keith Hall, Inverurie, together with a suite of papier-mâché furniture, by Jennens & Bettridge in October 1850","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Cheval firescreen, of papier-mâché, in Jacobean style, the main panel painted with a view of Keith Hall, Inverurie, Scotland","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Jones, Yvonne, <i>Japanned Papier-Mâché and Tinware c. 1740-1940</i>.
