The National Photographic Record Association was founded in 1897 by Sir Benjamin Stone. A prolific photographer and Conservative MP for Birmingham, Stone enlisted a network of local camera club members to document, county by county, what they saw as Britain’s heritage threatened by modernisation. The platinum printing process was chosen for the project because of its superior tonal range and permanence. The Association deposited prints as they were made at the British Museum. The collection of over 5,000 photographs remained there until the year 2000, when it was transferred to the V&A.","physicalDescription":"One of a set of 4 b&w prints mounted on card depicting a bird market","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Malby, H J (Mr)","id":"A5051"},"association":{"text":"photographer","id":"AAT25687"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"platinum print mounted on card with handwritten ink notation","categories":[{"text":"Photographs","id":"THES48910"},{"text":"Shopping","id":"THES48895"},{"text":"Pets","id":"THES253010"},{"text":"Animals and Wildlife","id":"THES250852"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2009CA9421"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"512M","id":"THES49774"},"free":"","case":"MX22","shelf":"5","box":"82D"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"photograph","id":"AAT46300"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Bethnal Green","id":"x30468"},"association":{"text":"photographed","id":"x30151"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1904","earliest":"1904-01-01","latest":"1904-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"E.3158-2000","id":"O52328"},"association":"Object"},{"object":{"text":"E.3159-2000","id":"O52330"},"association":"Object"},{"object":{"text":"E.3161-2000","id":"O52332"},"association":"Object"}],"creditLine":"Transferred from the British Museum","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"274","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"21-5-2015","earliest":"2015-01-01","latest":"2025-12-31"},"part":"paper mount","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"355","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"21-5-2015","earliest":"2015-01-01","latest":"2025-12-31"},"part":"paper mount","note":"photograph is mounted on same board with three other photograhps"}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"On the back a label from the British Museum filled out in ink:\r\n\r\n'National Photographic Record Association\nBritish Museum Collection\nSubject: Sunday Morning Bethnal Green Bird Market\nCounty: London\r\nDate: 1904\r\nContributor: H.J.
