It belongs to a series of drawings, paintings and lithographs showing everyday life scenes set in trains and train stations that Daumier executed in the 1860s. This sheet is a good example of Daumier’s observation of the French society and its different professional categories. He did a few series of sketches focusing on different categories such as musicians, comedians, art collectors, rustic life and saltimbanques.","physicalDescription":"Four people (from left to right, an elderly woman, a man, a young boy and a woman) sitting on a bench in a room or a corridor flanking the railway on the left; a dog is waiting in front of the elderly woman who is pulling something out of her basket; the man looks asleep, the child is leaning towards his mother.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Honoré Daumier","id":"A3169"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"watercolour","id":"x33202"},{"text":"crayon","id":"x30605"},{"text":"pen and ink","id":"x32505"},{"text":"","id":""},{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"drawing","id":"x32498"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Crayon and watercolour with some pen and ink","categories":[{"text":"Drawings","id":"THES48966"},{"text":"Watercolours","id":"THES277714"},{"text":"Paintings","id":"THES48917"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2020MN3469","2006AU3228","2017KL6359","2023NP6276"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLD","id":"THES49658"},"free":"","case":"IONIDES","shelf":"20","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Watercolour","id":"x33202"}],[{"text":"Drawing","id":"x32498"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"No","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Paris","id":"x29068"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1865-1866","earliest":"1865-01-01","latest":"1866-12-31"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Bequeathed by Constantine Alexander Ionides","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"280","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"340","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"signed lower right h. Although most of these drawings show people sitting side by side in a coach, generally no more than 4 figures, the present drawing focuses on people waiting at the station. The drawing shows an exterior well lit from the left hand side by a bright daylight. A comparable play of light can be found in another drawing of similar subject: <i>Le départ du train</i> (The train is leaving) in a private collection (Maison D-310).\r\n\r\nGenerally dated around 1865-1866, this watercolour looks like a re-elaboration of an earlier composition: <i>Une salle d’attente</i> (an oil on paper in the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo (64:12). \r\n \r\nDaumier executed many lithographs on this thematic and the first lithograph of this series seems to be the one published in the satirical journal Le Charivari on the 8 September 1858. He comparatively did fairly few drawings and paintings on the same subject.
