Vitzthum, Cento disegni napoletani (exhibition catalogue), Uffizi, Florence, 1967, p. 26; J. Brown 'More drawings by Jusepe de Ribera' in Master Drawings, 12, 1974, p. 368, no. 5, pl. 28a \r\nVitzthum compares this and no. 792 with a drawing in the Uffizi which is on the back of a letter signed by Ribera (Cento disegni no. 32; pI. 15). He suggests a date about 1630. Brown (loc. cit.) dates it in the 1620'S. The saint is bound to the tree in exactly the same way and at the same angle as the St Sebastian in Mr J. A. Gere's collection, except that he is kneeling instead of standing and his head is turned in a different direction. The two drawings were presumably made at about the same time and for the same purpose. Gere's drawing is reproduced in W.
