It was previously attributed to Girolamo Genga. It is a preparatory study for an altarpiece that Fabrizio Santafede created for the Church of San Francesco in Caiazzo, near Caserta in the Campania region. The completed altarpiece, which remains preserved in this church, is signed and dated by the artist with the inscription \"FABRIZIO DI S.TA FEDE PINXIT 1588.\" The inscription allow us to determine that the drawing was made in 1588 as part of the preparatory process.
