The cup was first made in 1811-12 by Paul Storr (Liverpool Museums). An example in the Royal Collection is hallmarked 1812-13 by Paul Storr. \rThe poses of the male figures in this design differ from those on the final cup. The pose of the figure on the left is closer to that on a relief in Villa Albani which is believed to have been the inspiration for the treatment of this group. The Albani relief shows Hermes, Eurydice and Orpheus. For a sketch by Flaxman of a figure of Hermes see CAI.1008. For a drawing of the complete cup see 2410. A drawing of the final figure group is in the Huntington Library and Art Gallery. For the scene on the other side of the cup, see a drawing in the British Museum (1900,0824.187). Also in the British Museum is a print of the whole cup made as a pattern to promote its production (1900,0824.1880). It is inscribed “Designed by John Flaxman RA, abrout 230 guineas”.\rBequeathed by C. A. Ionides, 1900.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Designs for the figures on the side of a silver vase, by John Flaxman (1755-1826) circa 1810","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"D.
