About 1817\r\nEnvelope (used twice) with sketches of sculpture on back\r\nPencil, pen and ink and wash\r\n\r\nAlthough Flaxman's finished drawings show exquisite draughtmanship and a definitive and confident outline, the preliminary rough sketches show his thinking processes, hesitations and changes of mind. These sketches on envelopes and other scraps are from a series which relate to a monument to Chichester Skeffington, 4th and last Earl of Massereene, (died 1816) Antrim Parish Church, Ireland.
