As the Spanish Civil War intensified in the late 1930s, he fled to Britain where he lived until 1949. His partner at this time was poet Luis Cernuda Bidón (1902-1963) and the two travelled around the UK including Edinburgh, and Oxford where Prieto sketched a number of athletic university students. His subject matter regularly included homoerotic themes including sailors and languid scenes of nude male groups.
