Each plate inscribed with title. The title page states that Lewis's Illustrations were 'made during a Residence in that City &c. in the Years 1835-6', but also that they were 'Arranged and Drawn on Stone from the original Sketches of Coke Smyth by John F. Lewis.'  At the time, Lewis himself had not travelled to Constantinople.
