The colours of 18th and 19th century embroideries were originally very bright but many have faded to pleasing pastel shades; often great quantities of metal thread were used. Napkins were mainly used to clean fingers during meals, but were also used as decoration and as covers. Their designs were consistently inventive.","physicalDescription":"Towel/Napkin of linen embroidered with silk in double running stitch variations and combinations and musabak and with plate in satin stitch. There is a narrow border which extends up the sides and is in the form of an angular green meander with a floral sprig coloured in pairs. The main boprder consists of a repeated motif of a blue and gold bowl with coloured fruit (?) and spiky leaves.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"linen","id":"x29412"},{"text":"silk thread","id":"x30127"},{"text":"metal thread","id":"x30421"}],"techniques":[{"text":"weaving","id":"AAT53642"},{"text":"embroidering","id":"AAT53653"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Linen, embroidered with silk in double running stitch variations and combinations and in musabak, and with plate in satin stitch","categories":[{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"},{"text":"Embroidery","id":"THES48960"}],"styles":[{"text":"Ottoman","id":"AAT21614"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"MES","id":"THES48607"},"images":["2006AM0607","2018LE2906","2018LE2917"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"016","id":"THES312655"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Towel","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Turkey","id":"x29225"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1800-1876","earliest":"1800-01-01","latest":"1876-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"78.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"45","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Towel or napkin, embroidered, Turkish, 1800s.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"Marianne Ellis and Jennifer Wearden.
