It would have formed the lower leg, from knee to ankle.  The upper part of the trousers was seldom decorated because it would have been hidden beneath a long chemise.\r\nAt the end of the 18th century embroidery designs began to develop into rigid and heavily stylised borders. The colours were strong and designers used greater quantities of metal thread than in previous centuries.  The designs were always inventive.","physicalDescription":"Woman's trouser panel, linen embroidered with silk in a combination of filling stitches worked on the diagonal and single lines of running in steps, double running in a line and counted satin stitch.\r\nThe panel is cut and tapers towards the ankle to create fullness in the leg.  An additional piece of fabric has been sewn along the lower right hand side.\r\nThe lower edge is decorated with a line of inward facing red triangles.
