Benjamin Robert Haydon, who had championed the acquisition of the Marbles, called on Canova and invited him to his studio. William Bewick came to London from Darlington in 1816 and became a pupil of Haydon.  There is no evidence that Bewick met Canova in England. Perhaps this work is his version of one of Haydon's drawings. Sir Thomas Lawrence made an oil portrait of Canova in 1815, and as Bewick was associated with Lawrence later on, it may instead be a version of one of Lawrence's drawings. Bewick had the reputation of being an excellent copyist.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Drawing, portrait of the sculptor Canova, by William Bewick, early 19th century","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"William Bewick   Life and letters of William Bewick (artist)   edited by Thomas Landseer. 1871"}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"unique","id":"THES48864"},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[{"text":"London","id":"x28980"}],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[{"text":"Antonio Canova","id":"A8217"}],"associatedPerson":[{"text":"Haydon, Benjamin Robert","id":"N1335"}],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[{"text":"The sale of the Elgin Marbles to the British Government","id":"V55"}],"contentOthers":[{"text":"portrait","id":"AAT15637"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["E.1-1997"],"accessionNumberNum":"1","accessionNumberPrefix":"E","accessionYear":1997,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-23","recordCreationDate":"2000-12-14","availableToBook":false}}
