An early part of the Victoria and Albert Museum buildings, the Prince Consort's Gallery was a first-floor corridor running through the centre of the elaborately-decorated South Court (since refitted; now rooms 33 and 38, used for exhibitions). The design incorporates a mosaic portrait of Prince Albert, who, prior to his death in 1861, had been an important figure in the establishing of the Museum. The portrait and the arch which it decorates were both carried out, but the ornate metalwork screen below was not. This feature of the design was, however, used elsewhere in the Museum, for screens at the heads of the Lecture Theatre staircases. There is a related sketch by Sykes: see 1115:2.","physicalDescription":"Highly-finished pencil and watercolour drawing on paper, showing a decorative arch and screen proposed for the north end of the interior of the Prince Consort's Gallery. In the tympanum of the arch is a mosaic medallion portrait of Prince Albert, flanked by allegorical figures and accompanied with the inscription ALBERTUS CONJUX VICTORIAE REGINAE FUNDATOR MDCCCLVII. Below, pilasters supporting the arch are adorned with decorative panels incorporating a 'V A' motif. The two openings of the screen are framed by twisted columns of ornate metalwork; through the openings can be seen the central portion of the North Court, with its prominent corbels, clerestory windows and a tented ceiling.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Sykes, Godfrey","id":"A6461"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"x36960"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"pencil","id":"x30347"},{"text":"watercolour","id":"x33202"},{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"drawing","id":"x32498"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Pencil drawing with watercolour on paper","categories":[{"text":"History of the V&A","id":"THES252692"},{"text":"Drawings","id":"THES48966"},{"text":"Architecture","id":"THES48993"},{"text":"Designs","id":"THES48968"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2014GX9698","2012FR3790","2006BC7831"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLE","id":"THES49657"},"free":"","case":"A","shelf":"181","box":"A"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"drawing","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1863","earliest":"1858-01-01","latest":"1867-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Width","value":"43.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Width of paper","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"62.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Height of paper","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Design for Victoria and Albert Museum by Godfrey Sykes, Prince Consort's Gallery, ca. 1863","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"Physick, John. <u>The Victoria and Albert Museum: The History of Its Building</u>.
