The drawing focuses on the figure of Wellington, and only some of the generals are shown. \nThe verso shows the figures in the direction of the print and may represent an earlier stage than the drawing on the recto. \nStothard pubblished a set of eight of his own etchings of the Wellington Shield on the 1st September 1820, the title page lettered \"Presented MDCCCXXII [or MDCCCXXI] to Field Marshal The Duke of Wellington By The Merchants & Bankers of London/ Executed in silver gilt my Messrs Green Ward & Green. Ludgate Street.\"\nSee E.143, 144-1971 (1821 title), E.14488- 14494 (1822 title).\nThe silver gilt Wellington Shield, now in the Wellington Museum, was presented in 1821 to the Duke of Wellington by the Merchants and Bankers of the City of London. It was made by Benjamin Smith for Green, Ward and Green. Stothard won a competition for its design in 1814. The shield as made has ten outer compartments. A preliminary design for the shield (E.1221-1921) has twelve outer compartments and was probably the initial design presented in 1814.\nPurchased by J.
