In her letter to the museum of August 1923 she wrote that they had been ‘brought home by my brother the late General Sotheby, Rifle Brigade – of Ecton, Northamptonshire – after the war in China of 1857 and taken from the Emperor of China’s Summer Palace.’ Lieutenant (later Major-General) Frederick Edward Sotheby (1837-1909) served in the Second Anglo-Chinese War (Second Opium War) of 1856-1860 and was part of the combined British and French army who plundered and destroyed the Yuanming Yuan, or Summer Palace, of the Chinese emperors in 1860, so it seems likely that this object was one of the many pieces looted from the palace.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Candlestick, cloisonné enamel on copper  ","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["M.295-1923"],"accessionNumberNum":"295","accessionNumberPrefix":"M","accessionYear":1923,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-08-05","recordCreationDate":"2009-06-25","availableToBook":true}}
