Figure of animals featured prominently during this period, when they became part of the elegant interiors of European residences. \r\n\r\nSeveral objects were further enriched by metal fittings added in Europe, which often transformed their original function, such as in the case of this pair of candlesticks. Gilt bronze mounts, also known as 'ormolu', were the most popular on the French market between 1740 and 1760, being applied to Sèvres porcelain, East Asian porcelain and other ceramics. \r\n\r\nThese candlesticks belong to an extraordinary bequest made to the Museum by John Jones, a former tailor and army clothier, after his death in 1882. Most of the objects in his porcelain collection were made in France between 1700 and 1790.","physicalDescription":"Candlestick, one of a pair, composed of a porcelain figure representing a parrot on rock, decorated with turquoise and blue glazes, the beak left unglazed, and a gilt chased bronze mount with two brackets for candles","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"porcelain","id":"AAT10662"},{"text":"bronze","id":"AAT10957"}],"techniques":[{"text":"glazed","id":"AAT53914"},{"text":"gilt","id":"AAT53789"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Porcelain with turquoise glaze and gilt bronze mounts","categories":[{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Household objects","id":"THES48939"}],"styles":[{"text":"Qing","id":"AAT18478"},{"text":"Kangxi","id":"AAT18482"},{"text":"Monochrome","id":"x44960"},{"text":"Chinese export","id":"AAT120350"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2010EA3527","2017KE1771"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"136","id":"THES49877"},"free":"","case":"7","shelf":"2","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Candlestick","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Jingdezhen","id":"x32230"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"France","id":"x28849"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"mounts"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1662-1722","earliest":"1662-01-01","latest":"1722-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""},{"date":{"text":"1740-1760","earliest":"1740-01-01","latest":"1760-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"813A-1882","id":"O1171531"},"association":""}],"creditLine":"Bequeathed by John Jones","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"22","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Bequeathed by John Jones, accessioned in 1882.
