Founded by Ottavio Missoni in 1953, Missoni became internationally recognised for their beautiful machine-knits for both men and women in densely patterned rich colour palettes. While the garments were machine-knitted, Ottavio Missoni said they were intended to have a 'handmade look' about them. He wore a version of this cardigan himself. Ottavio and his wife Rosita were also equal partners in every aspect of their family-owned and run business.\r\n\r\nIn 1974, the year this cardigan was made, the Fashion Museum in Bath acquired male and female ensembles by Missoni to represent the Dress of the Year. This was the first time that the Dress of the Year chose men's and women's looks from the same designer.","physicalDescription":"A man's cardigan with turn-down collar and six buttons down the front. Although the garments are machine-made, they have (in Ottavio Missoni’s words) ‘a handmade look about them’. The man’s cardigan displayed here – a similar design is worn by Ottavio Missoni in the accompanying photograph – typifies the informal knitted alternative to the tailored jacket that was popular in the 1970s.\r\nGIVEN BY THE HON.
