The portrait of the German theologian Luther appears in several examples of Chinese export porcelain.\r\n\r\nThis specific example may have been executed after mezzotint prints made in 1714-15 by John Faber the Elder (c.1660-1721), a portrait miniaturist and printmaker born in the Netherlands and subsequently active in London around 1696-98. The print, part of a set of twenty-one plates devoted to Protestant reformers, depicts the theologian at half length in an oval frame, and bears at the bottom an inscription with his name in Latin and dates. \r\n\r\nProtestant teachings were still dominant in Europe during the first half of the 18th century, especially in the Netherlands, and it is likely that copies of books with Luther's teachings and prints of Protestant reformers circulated widely. The Chinese decorators copied the originals with some degree of freedom. They omitted the dates of birth and added rococo scrolls around the oval medallion, an unusual decorative detail considering the subject.","physicalDescription":"Vase painted <i>en grisalle</i> and gold with the image of an European man in a medallion, beneath which is written 'Martinus Lutherus'.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"porcelain","id":"AAT10662"}],"techniques":[{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"},{"text":"gilded","id":"AAT53789"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Porcelain painted in black enamel","categories":[{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Vases","id":"THES48879"}],"styles":[{"text":"Qing","id":"AAT18478"},{"text":"Chinese export","id":"AAT120350"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2008BV1492","2008BV1493","2010EB2367","2010EB2366","2008BV1542"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"136","id":"THES49877"},"free":"","case":"9","shelf":"5","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Vase","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Jingdezhen","id":"x32230"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1730-1760","earliest":"1725-01-01","latest":"1760-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Basil Ionides bequest","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"21.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Martinus Lutherus","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Vase decorated <i>en grisaille</i> with the portrait of Martin Luther, China, Qing dynasty, ca. 1730-60","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Kenji Yoshida and Brian Durrans (eds), Self and Other : Portraits from Asia and Europe, Osaka: Asahi Shimbun, 2008, no. 215"},{"reference":{"text":"Kerr, Rose and Luisa E.
