Thick, square, neat, unglazed footring. With a bluish-white lustrous glaze, and painted on one side with a flaming red orb of the sun above blue waves (the sun signifying <i>yang</i> and the water and mists <i>yin</i>), and with cloud scrolls above in blue. On the other side an underglaze blue peach (signifying longevity) takes the place of the sun. Although the designs are not typical, many other features of the vase point to its being an archaising piece in early Ming style. The blue painting is stippled with dots to simulate the 'heaped and piled' effect produced by the precipitation of excess cobalt which occurs on Yuan and early Ming ceramics.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"porcelain","id":"AAT10662"}],"techniques":[{"text":"blue and white and red","id":"x44545"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Porcelain painted in underglaze blue and copper red","categories":[{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Porcelain","id":"THES48907"},{"text":"Vases","id":"THES48879"}],"styles":[{"text":"Qing","id":"AAT18478"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2010ED2863"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"137","id":"THES49876"},"free":"","case":"11","shelf":"1","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Vase","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Jingdezhen","id":"x32230"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"second quarter of 18th century","earliest":"1725-01-01","latest":"1750-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Professor E.
