Although men and women wore hairpins, its original owner was probably a woman. Numerous similar hairpins have been found in the tombs of aristocratic women in Anyang, the capital city of the Shang dynasty (1600-1046 BC), the earliest recorded dynasty in China's history. This is also when the earliest form of Chinese writing developed, and silk use was widely distributed throughout China. \nHairpins crafted from animal bones such as cattle, pig and deer were luxury items produced by local workshops for elite use. In ancient China, such hairpins symbolised an important rite of passage for young women, indicating they were ready to marry. Marking the transition from childhood to adulthood, girls began to style their hair in buns with a pair of hairpins from the age of fifteen.","physicalDescription":"Hairpin of carved bone, one end decorated with a stylised bird.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"bone","id":"AAT11798"}],"techniques":[{"text":"carved","id":"AAT53149"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Carved bone","categories":[{"text":"Accessories","id":"THES48998"},{"text":"Personal accessories","id":"THES48912"},{"text":"Hair and hairstyles","id":"THES258945"}],"styles":[{"text":"Shang","id":"AAT18356"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2021MX3387","2006BF3116","2021MX3388"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"007","id":"THES395002"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Hairpin","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"China","id":"x29398"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1100 BC - 1046 BC","earliest":"-1100-01-01","latest":"-1046-01-01"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Purchased with Art Fund support, the Vallentin Bequest, Sir Percival David and the Universities China Committee","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"10","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"2.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Formerly Eumorfopoulos Collection (RF1937/5674)","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Hairpin (<i>ji</i>), carved bone, China, Shang dynasty, 1100-1046 B.C.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Clunas, Craig. <u>Chinese Carving</u>.
