On 1 April 1572 protestant rebels (in Dutch: Geuzen) captured Brielle in the name of Prince William of Orange, leader of the Dutch army). Brielle was the first town to be liberated from the Spanish and this historic event is still celebrated by its residents every year on the 1st of April. The same coat of arms and motto are shown on the facade of the 1791 City Hall of Brielle.\nThe arms are supported by a mythical beast named 'Capirussa' with a female head, ears and tail of a dog and horse's legs.
