He created the simple form using sheet silver and soldering the joins. This piece, like much of his work, was inspired by the pure forms of Swedish plates and beakers made in the period 1500-1600.\r\n\r\nHaglund was one of the most important Swedish silversmiths of the second half of the 20th century. He trained in Sweden with master silversmiths in Köping and Kristianstad and in the Atelier Borgila. This was the workshop of Erik Fleming, the leading Swedish silversmith of the 1920s and 1930s. Haglund has been one of the major figures and influences in post-war Swedish silversmithing, which in turn has had an enormous international impact.","physicalDescription":"The base circular with a plain moulded rim; the side wall flares outwards at an angle of 45°, the circumference of the bowl has a plain moulded rim on the internal side. A vertical seam, running from the base to the upper rim is clearly visible. The hammer marks are left visible, particularly on the inner face of the wall, as are minor scratches and blemishes which have been deliberately left by the silversmith.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Haglund, Birger","id":"A4719"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"sterling silver","id":"AAT10977"}],"techniques":[{"text":"Hammered","id":"AAT54098"},{"text":"Soldered","id":"AAT53949"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Sheet silver, soldered","categories":[{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2006AM1321","2006AM1324","2006AL4100"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES405364"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Bowl","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Stockholm","id":"x29184"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1991","earliest":"1991-01-01","latest":"1991-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"M.51-2000","id":"O58758"},"association":"Set"}],"creditLine":"Given by John Mallet through Art Fund in memory of Helena Dahlbäck Lutteman","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"15.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"5.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"HAG in a rectangular lozenge, the maker's mark for `Birger Haglund' above the state mark, three crowns within a circle (rubbed).","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"Stamped","position":"Stamped on the underside of the base, forming a crucifix pattern with the other marks.","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"Makers's mark","note":"Makers's mark; Stamped on the underside of the base, forming a crucifix pattern with the other marks.; Stamped"},{"content":"R10 in a rectangular lozenge, the date letter for 1991","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"1991","earliest":"1991-01-01","latest":"1991-12-31"},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"Stamped","position":"Stamped on the underside of the base, forming a crucifix pattern with the other marks.","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"Date","note":"Date; Stamped on the underside of the base, forming a crucifix pattern with the other marks.; Stamped; 1991"},{"content":"BirgerH","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"Stamped","position":"Stamped on the underside of the base, forming a crucifix pattern with the other marks.","script":"Facsimile","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"Signature","note":"Signature; Facsimile; Stamped on the underside of the base, forming a crucifix pattern with the other marks.; Stamped"},{"content":"The sterling standard mark, 925 within a rectangular lozenge","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"Stamped","position":"Stamped on the underside of the base, forming a crucifix pattern with the other marks.","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"Standard mark (Hallmark)","note":"Standard mark (Hallmark); Stamped on the underside of the base, forming a crucifix pattern with the other marks.; Stamped"}],"objectHistory":"Historical significance: Birger Haglund trained as a silversmith with master craftsmen in Köping and Kristianstad, worked as a trainee employee in the famous pre-war workshop, the Atelier Borglia of Erik Fleming and at various stages in his long career has worked in South Africa, Afghanistan and the West Indies which has subsequently influenced his work in various subtle directions.
