At the end of each volume a single text page gives painting and colouring instructions for aspiring painters. Although these works were essentially designed as picture manuals, the detailed illustrations of the latest fashions had a wider appeal among townspeople, who could purchase this type of publication from booksellers. The first volume features high-ranking beauty icons from different periods, including court ladies of the Heian period (794–1185). The second volume shows modern townswomen enjoying outings and seasonal activities. The third volume reveals the contemporary daily lives of courtesans in the urban centres of Kyoto, Osaka and Edo (present-day Tokyo). \n\nSukenobu is best known for his refined depictions of fashionable women. He was the most influential and prolific book illustrator in Japan in the first half of the eighteenth century. Many of his books, including Picture Book of Evergreens, remained in print for many years, even after his death.
