The Republic is represented by a maiden with lance and the hat of liberty, seated in a safe, secluded garden in front of an Orange tree, representing the house of Orange. The political background for this decorative scheme was the War of the Austrian Succession, between 1740 and 1748, when the Netherlands were under thread from the French. The Dutch were looking for a strong leader and on 4 May 1747, the States General of the Netherlands named William General Stadtholder of all seven of the United Provinces of the Netherlands, making the position hereditary for the first time. This perilous period came to an end with the Peace of Aachen, which was concluded on 18 October 1748. It is likely that the goblet was engraved to celebrate this peace, or the elevation of William IV to stadtholder of the Republic in May 1747. William IV died on 22 October 1751, and it is unlikely that the goblet was made of that. \nThe engraving can be attributed to Jacob Sang, a Saxon glass engraver from Erfurt in Germany, who settled in Amsterdam in 1747 or slightly before. His first dated pieces were made in 1752 and this glass can be considered an early work. Sang engraved a similarly shaped glass, now in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, in 1752. The treatment of the orange tree on that glass is similar to that on our glass.","physicalDescription":"Goblet of lead glass on a tall stem, wheel-engraved with an allegory of peace in the Netherland and with the arms of William IV, Prince of Orange, and his wife Anne, Daughter of George II, with those of the seven provinces of the Dutch republic.
