Japan during the Edo period (1615-1868), kazari-dana were a type of decorative and functional shelving unit in the home. The high point of these were the san-dana (three shelves), which consisted of sets of three separate units, the zushi-dana, kuro-dana and sho-dana, decorated in high quality and lavish lacquer decoration. These were originally exclusively for elite families, forming part of elaborate wedding sets. The decoration included the mon (family crests) of both the bride and grooms' families. The zushi-dana was the most ornate and elaborate of the three shelving units, and held many matching boxes and other accessories, such as the suzuribako (writing box) and tebako (cosmetic or 'handy' box). \n\nOriginally zushi-dana were exclusively for elite families, but during the latter part of the Edo period, they were also used by the merchant class. This example, made in the 19th century and without family crests, was undoubtedly not part of a wedding set. ","physicalDescription":"This flat-topped, rectangular zushi-dana (shelving and storage unit) consists of three tiers, a cupboard, drawer and tray. It is made of wood completely covered in lacquer, which makes it impossible to identify the wood used. The bottom tier of the unit is completely enclosed and is divided into two parts, the left side comprising roughly three-quarters of the width. Whereas the left side comprises one drawer, the right side consists of a drawer with a removable tray on four small feet above, which fits inside the drawer below so that it is flush with the exterior surfaces of the drawer. The second tier consists of a cupboard which occupies half the width of the left-hand side of the zushi-dana. The top is flat with an everted edge to the right-hand side. The cupboard doors open down the middle with two pairs of hinges on each side. The right-hand side of the second tier is formed by two upright pieces of lacquered wood at the front and back. These are joined and strengthened at the side and back by a piece of rectangular lacquered wood with openwork and rounded rectangular designs with inverted corners. For the third and uppermost tier, two upright pieces of lacquered wood at the front and back sit on top of the cupboard on the left. These, together with those on the right, hold the flat top.\n\nThe zushi-dana is decorated on all main exterior surfaces with pine trees and small rocks along an undulating shore line in gold takamaki-e (raised sprinkled picture) and hiramaki-e (low sprinkled picture) lacquer, kirikane (cut gold) and inlaid gold foil on a black lacquer ground, sprinkled with gold powder in places. The design continues round all four sides of the drawers and tray. The exterior and interior of the cupboard doors, as well as the underside of the unit's top depict pine saplings. The openwork panels on the second tier are decorated on the exterior and interior with continuous pine scrolls in gold and silver hiramaki-e lacquer. All other exterior edges consist of geometric borders. The inside of the cupbopard, drawers and tray consist of nashi-ji (pear-skin ground) lacquer. The drawer knobs and cupboard catches and fittings, as well as protective and decorative strips of floral scrolls throughout are all of the same metal.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"C168"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"wood","id":"AAT11914"},{"text":"lacquer","id":"AAT14916"},{"text":"metal","id":"AAT10900"}],"techniques":[{"text":"lacquering","id":"AAT53796"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"","categories":[],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2006AM2005","2011EU7935","2011EU7934","2011EU7925","2011EU7699","2011EU7698","2011EU7697","2011EU7696","2011EU7695","2011EU7694","2011EU7693","2011EU7692","2011EU7691","2011EU7234","2011EU6995","2011EU6994","2011EU6993","2011EU6992","2011EU5578","2011EU5577","2011EU5576","2012FP3734","2012FP3735","2012FP3736","2012FP3737","2012FP3738","2012FP3739","2012FP3740","2012FP3741","2012FP3742","2012FP3743","2012FP3744","2012FP3745","2012FP3725","2012FP3726","2012FP3727","2012FP3728","2012FP3729","2012FP3730","2012FP3731","2012FP3732","2012FP3733","2012FR8855","2012FR8856","2012FT9537","2012FT9538","2012FT9539","2012FT9540","2017KE2350"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"135","id":"THES49878"},"free":"","case":"BY3","shelf":"CASE1","box":""},{"current":{"text":"135","id":"THES49878"},"free":"","case":"BY3","shelf":"CASE1","box":""},{"current":{"text":"135","id":"THES49878"},"free":"","case":"BY3","shelf":"CASE1","box":""},{"current":{"text":"135","id":"THES49878"},"free":"","case":"BY3","shelf":"CASE1","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Cabinet","id":""}],[{"text":"Drawer","id":""}],[{"text":"Drawer","id":""}],[{"text":"Drawer","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Japan","id":"x29399"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"19th century","earliest":"1800-01-01","latest":"1899-12-31"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"41","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"49","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"27","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"With outer door open: width 52 cm, depth 31 cm approx.\r\nMeasured on the object","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Cabinet of black and gold lacquer, with pine trees on along a shore line, pine scrolls and geometric borders, Japan, 19th century","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"trees","id":"AAT132410"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"Shelved cabinet\r\nAbout 1850\r\n\r\nJapan \r\nWood covered in black lacquer with takamaki-e (raised sprinkled picture), hiramaki-e (low sprinkled picture) and nashi-ji (pear-skin ground) lacquer, and kirikane (cut gold foil) inlay decoration\r\nFittings: metal \r\n\r\nMuseum no.
