When the collar was worn, they would have presented a beautiful spectacle in motion. The fringes comprise hand-knotted silk, forming a net of coin-shaped patterns hung with a series of tassels. Chinese craftsmen used the same knotting technique in the 18th and 19th centuries to create luxurious fringing for embellishing embroidered silk shawls or bedcovers for export to Europe or the United States.\r\nThis cloud collar is decorated with silk embroidery in shades of blue, and features floral motifs, butterflies and a bat. It would have been worn to complement formal attire on special occasions. Fringes and tassels were associated with dance and theatre costumes, as the loose threads would respond to the wearer's slightest movement. Dancers and actors would wear more elaborate versions in bold designs and colours when performing on stage.","physicalDescription":"Cloud collar (<i>yunjian</i>) for a Han woman, of satin-weave silk with embroidery in shades of blue and white silks in satin stitches, and some details of the peonies are picked out in knot stitches.
