Duncan Grant and Vanessa Bell were involved as co-directors of the Workshops and artists such as Wyndham Lewis, Edward Wadsworth, Nina Hamnett and the sculptor, Henri Gaudier-Brzeska also produced designs. Some pieces were made by the artists themselves. However, the designs were often given over to specialist craftsmen such as John Joseph Kallenborn, who was responsible for much of the marquetry work for the Omega Workshop. Here, French artist and sculptor, Henri Gaudier-Brzeska's (1891-1915) design, as executed by Kallenborn, shows the influence of Vorticism in its 'cubing' of the human form. He also used the 'Wrestlers' theme in a plaster relief and as a linocut.","physicalDescription":"A circular inlaid marquetry tray with an abstract depiction of two wrestlers.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Gaudier-Brzeska, Henri","id":"A8018"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"x36960"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Omega Workshops","id":"A7158"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"wood","id":"AAT11914"}],"techniques":[{"text":"marquetry","id":"AAT53853"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Wood, with marquetry","categories":[{"text":"Furniture","id":"THES48948"},{"text":"Woodwork","id":"THES48877"},{"text":"Household objects","id":"THES48939"},{"text":"Tableware & cutlery","id":"THES48888"}],"styles":[{"text":"Vorticist","id":"AAT21515"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":["2006AV2431"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"PL001","id":"THES413447"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Tray","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1913","earliest":"1908-01-01","latest":"1917-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"65","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"08/02/2017","earliest":"2017-02-08","latest":"2017-02-08"},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"71.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"diameter including handles","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"4.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"minimum height (is slightly warped so does not sit flat)","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"4.9","unit":"cm","qualifier":"maximum height (is slightly warped so does not sit flat)","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"The design for this inlaid tray was made by Gaudier-Brzeska for the Omega Workshops and is the only known tray of his to have survived.
