'Xiehe Maoyi Gongsi 協和貿易公司' [Cooperative Trading Company'] is written right to left along the top of the poster. It is written in gold characters outlined in black against a red background. The framing of the text resembles a scrolling banner with a red front and a gold back. Scrolling flowers are depicted in colour beneath the centre of the banner. These flowers are flanked by a decorative scroll in dark green on a light green background. Four characters are written on the green background either side of the central floral scroll. They read: Long Live the Republic [of China].\n\nThe central scene in the poster shows a Chinese woman standing alone in the foreground of a landscape scene. There is an artist's signature and seal in the lower left of the landscape scene reproduced as part of the lithographic print,. She wears a blue jacket with a high collar with prominent white trim. Her long brown skirt is pleated, with white trim along the hem and the pleats. Both the jacket and the skirt are decorated with floral motifs. She wears Western style shoes with a small heel. Her left foot is turned outward toward the viewer, revealing a green stockinged foot. She holds a white handkerchief in her right hand, and a sprig of yellow flowers in her left.\n\nThe woman is standing on a bridge, with flowers growing along its edge. A large, porous garden rock is positioned behind her. A canal stretches out behind her. The leaves of trees on the opposite bank bend backward, as if blown in a gentle breeze. A small dog on the opposite bank looks directly at the viewer. In the distance we see a canal boatman, a series of buildings with white walls and dark roofs, and a distant hill topped by a pagoda. The recession of space is made clear by both an attempt at single point perspective and the use of a more dilute colour palette and less defined outlines in the deep distance. The greater clarity of the foreground emphasises the female figure, and the products advertised in the cartouche beneath her.\n\nThis cartouche depicts five different packs of cigarettes from four different brands: Golden Rod Cigarettes, Purple Mountain Cigarettes, Golden Charms Cigarettes, and Passing Clouds. The cigarettes are set against a faint pink background within a gold border.\n\nThere is a calendar in the left and right margins of the poster, dated 1914. The year of the calendar is listed three different ways. In the cartouche at the top of the left hand border the year is listed as \"1914 in the Western calendar\". In the cartouche at the top of the right hand border it is listed as: \"The third year of The Republic of China, and the guichou and jiayin years of the old calendar.\" As the traditional Chinese calendar does not exactly correlate with the Gregorian calendar 1914 spans two distinct years.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Muqiao, Zhou","id":"AUTH345403"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"Lithograph","id":"x35545"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Colour lithographic printing on paper","categories":[{"text":"Posters","id":"THES252963"},{"text":"Advertising","id":"THES49001"},{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2021NB9910","2017JV6529"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES396284"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Poster","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"China","id":"x29398"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1913-14","earliest":"1913-01-01","latest":"1914-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"The calendar is dated 1914, but could potentially have been made the previous year in preparation for distribution in the new year."}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"86","unit":"cm","qualifier":"approx.","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"60","unit":"cm","qualifier":"approx.","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Purchased, 1992","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Xiehe Trading Company (協和貿易公司) poster cigarette advertising poster, lithograph printing on paper, by Zhou Muqiao (1868-1923), China, 1913-14","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Laing, E.J., Selling Happiness: Calendar Posters and Visual Culture in Early Twentieth-Century Shanghai, Honolulu, 2004, pp.101-102"}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"Mass produced","id":"THES48863"},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["FE.478-1992"],"accessionNumberNum":"478","accessionNumberPrefix":"FE","accessionYear":1992,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-01-22","recordCreationDate":"2009-06-25","availableToBook":false}}
