A notable feature of the teaching arrangement at this institution is that the ceramics course is run not within a ceramics or design department, the usual loci of ceramics teaching at Japanese art college, but in the oil-painting department. Ceramics are introduced not as an independent discipline with its own set of principles and priorities, but as one of any number of potential vehicles for the expression of creative ideas. Nakamura's energy and eloquence as a teacher and the freedom of approach to clay he has been in the position to encourage - powerfully manifested in this work by Inoue Masayuki - have played an important role in the recent rise of Tokyo as a leading centre of experimental ceramics.","physicalDescription":"Abstract sculptural form consisting of (1) [FE.3:1] a large oval flattened tube, at 90 degrees to and across the diameter of which is attached a semi-circular triangular tube, the whole standing upright with the semi-circular element forming a vertical axis , the whole being supported by (2) [FE.3:3] a tall cylindrical component of uneven cross-section with a squared-off top and rounded foot, to the top of which is attached (3) [FE.3:4] a small pointed shape vaguely reminiscent of a bird's beak or a woman's shoe; where the oval and semi-circle meet at the bottom of (1) there sits (4) [FE.3:2], an elongated scoop-like form that protrudes forward from the sculpture; (1) and (2) are held together with a long bolt attached to (1) and secured by a  nut camouflaged by a small grey ceramic knob; (3) and (4) slot into place by means of pairs of bolts, one attached to each component, (3) being secured by a nut camouflaged by a small brown ceramic knob.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Inoue, Masayuki","id":"A32051"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"stoneware","id":"x30197"}],"techniques":[{"text":"glazed","id":"AAT53914"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Stoneware with clay slip and coloured glazes","categories":[{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Stoneware","id":"THES48890"},{"text":"Studio Pottery","id":"THES48889"}],"styles":[{"text":"Heisei","id":"x36359"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2006AT7686"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES344233"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES344233"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES344233"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES344233"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Sculpture","id":""}],[{"text":"Sculpture","id":""}],[{"text":"Sculpture","id":""}],[{"text":"Sculpture","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Japan","id":"x29399"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1993","earliest":"1993-01-01","latest":"1993-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Width","value":"65.0","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"85.0","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"110.0","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Sculpture, stoneware with clay slip and coloured glazes, by Inoue Masayuki, Japan, 1993.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["FE.3:1-1995","FE.3:2-1995","FE.3:3-1995","FE.3:4-1995"],"accessionNumberNum":"3","accessionNumberPrefix":"FE","accessionYear":1995,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE","Sculpture [1]","Sculpture [2]","Sculpture [3]","Sculpture [4]"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-23","recordCreationDate":"2009-06-25","availableToBook":true}}
