Each clog is carved from a single block of wood, with an upper made from plastic. Men tended to wear plain clogs, utilitarian footwear that was ideal for butchers and fish mongers working in wet markets, while women preferred clogs that were decorated with lacquered designs of birds and flowers. At weddings, brides would also wear clogs decorated with red soles and uppers. \nUp until the 1950s and '60s, many Hakka people in Guangdong province still wore wooden clogs. Numerous towns and cities in southern China specialised in clog-making, with pieces exported to Hong Kong.\r\n","physicalDescription":"Pair of Chinese open-styled wooden clogs for a woman with lacquered designs of birds and flowers on inner wooden sole, with red plastic upper nailed to the sole with leather.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"wood","id":"AAT11914"},{"text":"plastic","id":"AAT14570"},{"text":"leather","id":"AAT11845"}],"techniques":[{"text":"lacquering","id":"AAT53796"},{"text":"shoe-making","id":"x40339"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Lacquered wood, with plastic and leather","categories":[{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"},{"text":"Footwear","id":"THES48951"},{"text":"Clothing","id":"THES48975"},{"text":"Womenswear","id":"THES49044"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2015HX9838","2021MV9577","2021MW0046","2021MV9576","2021MV9582","2021MV9575","2021MW0045"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES326840"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES326840"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Shoe","id":""}],[{"text":"Shoe","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"China","id":"x29398"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1960-1975","earliest":"1960-01-01","latest":"1975-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Supported by the Friends of the V&A","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"24","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"8.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"3.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"heel","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Description at accession:\r\n\r\n“A pair of shoes for a woman, flower design painted on a varnished wooden sole, red plastic upper, Hong Kong. 1960-1975.
