The articles produced for local consumption included bed posts, back-scratchers, ornamented combs and chauris (bangles).  The craftsmen extended their range to meet the demands of Europeans, producing small boxes and perfume bottles.  This piece was originally acquired by the Indian Museum in London in 1855, and then described as being from Lahore. It is likely that it was bought from the Paris Exhibition of that year.","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"elephant ivory","id":"x35861"}],"techniques":[{"text":"Turned","id":"AAT53158"},{"text":"Carved","id":"AAT53149"},{"text":"Perforated","id":"AAT192586"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"","categories":[{"text":"India Museum","id":"THES286062"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SSEA","id":"THES48598"},"images":["2017KD0575","2020MR3174"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"006","id":"THES394765"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Perfume bottle","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Lahore","id":"x30874"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"c.1855","earliest":"1850-01-01","latest":"1859-12-31"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"9.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"10/2/17","earliest":"2017-02-10","latest":"2017-02-10"},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"10/2/17","earliest":"2017-02-10","latest":"2017-02-10"},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Indian Museum acquisition; transferred to the South Kensington Museum in 1879.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"A scent or perfume bottle made of turned and perforated ivory, Lahore, c. 1850-55","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["02465(IS)"],"accessionNumberNum":"02465","accessionNumberPrefix":"","accessionYear":null,"otherNumbers":[{"type":{"text":"India Museum Slip Book","id":"THES50388"},"number":""}],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-12","recordCreationDate":"2009-06-25","availableToBook":true}}
