The theatre designer Hugh Stevenson (1910 – 1956) who worked extensively with choreographers including Antony Tudor, Andrée Howard and Ninette de Valois was created the plots of many of the ballets he designed. It is likely that The Deserted House (a design for which was reproduced as an illustration in the Studio April 1944 p.126 as a ‘ballet in course of preparation’ ) was such a project that was unrealised. It might possibly have been inspired by E T A Hoffmann‘s story of the same title.\r\nHugh Stevenson was one of the leading designers for dance during the first quarter of a century of the development of C20th British Ballet. Although not revolutionary in style or concept, Stevenson's work, in its sympathy with both the subject and mood provides good examples of dance design at that time.\r\n","physicalDescription":"Full length faceless female figure turning towards left, with left hand raised to shoulder and right lying across skirt, wearing in low necked, short-sleeved red-black late18th century overdress with bold yellow sash with long tails and yellow neck and sleeve trim set with cameos. A cameo holds the overdress at centre front neck, revealing the pale blue green underdress, which forms the greater part of the skirt front. The shoulder length wig is grey with blue band set with high yellow-green ostrich plumes.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Stevenson, Hugh","id":"A3938"},"association":{"text":"costume designer","id":"AAT163428"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Watercolour","id":"AAT15045"},{"text":"gouache","id":"AAT70114"},{"text":"pencil","id":"x30347"}],"techniques":[{"text":"Drawing","id":"x32498"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Watercolour, gouache and pencil on paper","categories":[{"text":"Entertainment & Leisure","id":"THES48959"},{"text":"Theatre","id":"THES250537"},{"text":"Designs","id":"THES48968"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&P","id":"THES48602"},"images":["2013GV4486"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"008","id":"THES356599"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"costume design","id":"AAT163423"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Great Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"drawn","id":"x30545"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1945","earliest":"1945-01-01","latest":"1945-12-31"},"association":{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Cyril W.
