A small rectangular palm leaf (pothi-format) book rests on the lotus, identifying the figure as the Buddhist goddess who personifies the Perfection of Wisdom (<i>Prajnaparamita</i>). The goddess stands on a lotus base set on a plain square pedestal and is backed by a flaming aureole rising to a parasol. The style of the ornaments and facial features is characteristic of sculptural production in Indonesia in the 8th and 9th centuries, particularly in Sumatra and Central Java, where sculptors closely followed eastern Indian styles and iconography of the same period. The sculpture was cast in copper alloy using the lost-wax method.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"copper alloy","id":"x40014"}],"techniques":[{"text":"lost-wax","id":"AAT53113"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Copper alloy, lost-wax cast","categories":[{"text":"India Museum","id":"THES286062"},{"text":"Buddhism","id":"THES48984"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SSEA","id":"THES48598"},"images":["2020MT5358"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES368262"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Figure","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Indonesia","id":"x30044"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"Likely Central Java"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"8th century to 10th century","earliest":"0700-01-01","latest":"0999-12-31"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"225","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"05/11/2025","earliest":"2025-11-05","latest":"2025-11-05"},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"90","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"05/11/2025","earliest":"2025-11-05","latest":"2025-11-05"},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"85","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"05/11/2025","earliest":"2025-11-05","latest":"2025-11-05"},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"This sculpture was transferred to the Victoria and Albert from the India Museum in 1879. \r\n\r\nThe cult of Prajnaparamita, the Buddhist goddess of the Perfection of Wisdom, was stimulated by the circulation of a wider set of practices and ideas, in manuscript production, Buddhist ritual and liturgy, focussed on this goddess.
