Evelyn Hey Cobb in Malakand, Pakistan, around 1947; given by Cobb to the V&A, 13 October 1954.\r\n\r\nBuddhist relics were sometimes enshrined in reliquaries in the shape of stupas. These were originally large hemispherical mounds erected to cover relics, but developed a more vertical shape with elaborate bases and finials. See for example the larger V&A stupa-shaped reliquary from Gandhara, IS.299-1951.\r\n\r\nThis example was probably excavated in the Malakand area of the North West Frontier Province, Pakistan. It was formed part of a small collection assembled in Pakistan by Lt Col. Evelyn Hey Cobb, who explained in correspondence with the museum that 'these few relics are from the Swat Valley Malakand Agency N. W. F. P. Pakistan, where I was British Political Agent at the time of the formation of the Dominion of Pakistan.' Exactly how Cobb came into possession of the objects is unknown.\r\n\r\nGandhara was a centre of Buddhist activity between the 2nd and 5th centuries with numerous monasteries and stupas.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Relic container in the form of a stupa, schist, Gandhara, C2-5.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"Found in the Malakand area, North West Frontier Province, Pakistan","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["IS.140-1954","IS.140A-1954","IS.140B-1954"],"accessionNumberNum":"140","accessionNumberPrefix":"IS","accessionYear":1954,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE","Reliquary [1]","Reliquary [2]","Reliquary [3]"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-06-11","recordCreationDate":"2009-06-25","availableToBook":false}}
