Modelled after a Scottish Glengarry bonnet, it is embroidered with Kashmir shawl-style motifs. Whether this modified Glengarry was intended as a tourist novelty or for local use is uncertain; Scottish regiments had long been deployed across India, and it is possible that such caps became popular in the region after Captain Colin Mackenzie instituted the Glengarry as the uniform cap of the Ludhiana Sikh Regiment in 1848. Similarly adapted Glengarrys, decorated with beadwork and moosehair embroidery, were fashionable with certain groups of native peoples in North America at this time as well, showing the extent of the hat's popularity abroad.","physicalDescription":"Woolen cap, red ground of three sections (top and two sides) with red interior lining made up of smaller patches. Edged along the bottom by black ribbon, both ends of which hang at the back. Embroidered in coloured wool yarns with floral motifs on a filled black background, the pattern bounded along seam edges by broad borders in pink and blue. Inscribed on the interior with short, undeciphered markings.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Wool","id":"x40131"}],"techniques":[{"text":"Embroidery","id":"x40351"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Wool embroidered with wool","categories":[{"text":"Hats & headwear","id":"THES48943"},{"text":"Accessories","id":"THES48998"},{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"},{"text":"India Museum","id":"THES286062"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SSEA","id":"THES48598"},"images":["2016HY8185"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES394953"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Cap (headgear)","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Ludhiana","id":"x36412"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"Punjab (India)","id":"x29839"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"c.1855","earliest":"1850-01-01","latest":"1859-12-31"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"8078(IS)","id":"O76957"},"association":"Pair"}],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"125","unit":"mm","qualifier":"Maximum","date":{"text":"06/06/2018","earliest":"2018-06-06","latest":"2018-06-06"},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"130","unit":"mm","qualifier":"Maximum","date":{"text":"06/06/2018","earliest":"2018-06-06","latest":"2018-06-06"},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"300","unit":"mm","qualifier":"Maximum","date":{"text":"06/06/2018","earliest":"2018-06-06","latest":"2018-06-06"},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Measured by conservation","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Undeciphered inscription, probably in Urdu","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"Transferred from the India Museum is 1879.
