Following a seven-year apprenticeship with a specialist lithographic firm, he moved to London in February 1851 and found employment with Day and Sons. In 1859 the firm commissioned Simpson to visit India and make drawings for a book illustrating well-known places associated with the 1857-58 uprising. Thus began Simpson's long association with India, and the first of his four visits to the subcontinent over the next twenty-five years. \r\n\r\nIn 1878, he travelled to Afghanistan to cover the Second Anglo-Afghan War of 1878-80. It was here that he began to explore Buddhist stupas in the Jalalabad Valley and where he would have discovered this object. The information given at the time of acquisition noted that the object was “discovered by the late William Simpson, R.I. at Hada in the Jalalabad Valley, Afghanistan in 1879”. [List of Works of Art acquired by the Victoria and Albert Museum during the Year 1906, (London: Wyman and sons), p.3] He spent February of 1879 excavating Ahinposh where he discovered objects which he gave to the British Museum. \r\n\r\nGiven by Mrs. M. E. Simpson. This acquisition information reflects that found in the Museum records (Asia Department registers and/or Central Inventory) as part of a 2023 provenance research project.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Gautama Buddha; Sculpture, limestone, C3-4.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["15-1906"],"accessionNumberNum":"15","accessionNumberPrefix":"","accessionYear":1906,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-07-12","recordCreationDate":"2009-06-25","availableToBook":true}}
