Transferred from the India Museum to the South Kensington Museum in 1879.\r\n\r\nThis clay stupa was formerly in the collection of the India Museum, which housed the collections of the East India Company. It was transferred to the South Kensington Museum along with the rest of the India Museum's collections in 1879. It came into the India Museum as part of an ethnological collection assembled by Sir Thomas Douglas Forsyth. From 1873-4, Forsyth commanded an exploratory mission to Yarkand, China that travelled via Ladakh, India, where he acquired this object.
