The work is typical of Agra and other pieces in the collection with similar patterns were acquired from the Great Exhibition of 1851 or the Paris Exposition Universelle of 1867, and were probably made for those exhibitions. Agra had, and continues to have, a thriving industry producing small items of marble or alabaster inlaid with semi-precious stones, made  to sell to the tourists who flock to the city to see the Taj Mahal and Fort.
