The breast plate is of hammered iron decorated with an image of Shoki, the mythical demon-queller chasing two demons. The helmet is in the shape of a Chinese court cap with an articulated iron dragonfly fore-crest and two decorative pierced iron side-ornaments. The foot guards and greaves are of iron, the sleeves of silk covered in iron mail with decorative iron plates. The figure is mounted on an original 19th century life-size Japanese mannequin known in Japanese as an '<i><i>iki-ningyo',</i></i>literally 'living doll', which accompanied the armour at the time of its acquisition. The cuirass is of vertical plates of hammered iron, rivetted together with iron studs, each plate being ornamented with designs in repousse work, in high relief, representing Shoki attacking demons. The arm and leg pieces are exquisitely decorated with chrysanthemums and conventional floral medallions in repousse. Similar medallions are attached to the chain armour of the sleeves. The helmet is of iron in the form of a Chinese sage's hat; on the front is a dragon-fly, also of iron, articulated.
