Born into an established Kyoto lacquer making family, Suzuki's early development of avant-garde interests led to his association with the Nitten exhibition while he was still a student at Tokyo University of Arts in the mid-1950s.","physicalDescription":"While the base of the work shown here is constructed and lacquered in the standard manner, its lid is made of carved and polished acrylic. The inside of the base is decorated with diagonal bands of orange and grey oil-based paint. Blue and green paint have been applied to the flat, uncut areas of the acrylic and then covered in black lacquer. Born into an established Kyoto family specialising in <i>urushi</i> application, he wanted to break with tradition. In this work, he applied blue and green <i>urushi</i> to the inside of the acrylic lid, with more colours on the wooden box.
