Arundel and his wife Lillie named their daughter for her place of birth, Manra being known as Sydney Island at the time. It is not known how Mrs Aris acquired her Japanese objects, but in correspondence with the museum she mentions knowing Thomas B Blow who lived in Kyoto from 1906 to at least 1914 and supplied Japanese objects to many collectors in Europe. However, it is quite likely that this work was acquired in Britain or Europe where Japanese paintings and prints were circulating in great numbers by the late 19th-early 20th century. \r\n","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Pap, Japan, paintings and drawings\r\nStanding courtesan, by Kaigetsudō Dohan (active 1710–16), Edo (Tokyo), 1710–16 \r\n\r\n","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"Kimono: Kyoto to Catwalk","id":"AUTH407397"},"details":"Jackson, Anna (editor), London: V&A Publications, 2020","free":"\r\n"},{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":""},{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":""},{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":""}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"The bold styles fashionable at the beginning of the 18th century are revealed in this painting.
