Inspired by developments in contemporary American crafts when she lived in New York in the late 1970s, she began her exploration of the relationship between materials and forming techniques and the concept of the basket as both structure and space.","physicalDescription":"It was originally made as a single entity fully enclosing the space within it. At this stage it would have appeared as an almost solid form whose randomly plaited, multi-layered walls both concealed and hinted at the existence of an inner void. This was then subjected to the rather dramatic action of being cut in half. By doing this Sekijima not only revealed the full extent of the hitherto hidden interior.
