Such badges were made to adorn the front and back of a navy blue surcoat worn by court officials during ceremonial and courtly functions. The roundel is formed of two semi-circular parts, suggesting that it was made to be appended to the front of the coat. The two halves may have been joined latterly to form a decorative panel.\r\n\r\nStylised images of birds and animals were respectively used to indicate the different ranks of civil and military officials.
