On the facade of the shrine are five rectangular niches, three above and two below; the three above contain three seated figures representing respectively the Church (Sangha), the Buddha and the Law (Dharma) of Buddhism. The two standing figures in the lower two niches and the figure seated on the back of a Garuda in the middle of the surmounting pediment are all forms of the Patron Bodhisattva of the Lamaic Buddhists, Avalokitesvara. Each of the five panels has a broad frame round it, displaying the Eight Glorious Emblems of Buddhism, interspaced with bosses set with the mystic nine-gem (nau-ratan). Below is a wide lotus base set with coral and turquoise. At the two sides are two six-sides dragons, and two Makara-heads and nau-ratan bosses, all in gems and stones. Surmounting the pediment is a detachable three-tiered umbrella (chatra) of gilt copper and at the sides of the columns are two double flags of Nepal of gilt brass each with two applied plaques of silver repousse with the sacred syllable 'OM'. At each corner of the pediment hangs a flat tassel-like pendant with little leaves hanging from its points, and across the front from the tops of the columns is a silver chain hung with 37 jewelled drops. The foundation of the shrine is wood.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silver","id":"AAT11029"},{"text":"brass","id":"AAT10946"},{"text":"copper","id":"AAT11020"},{"text":"precious stones","id":"x44989"},{"text":"turquoise","id":"AAT11164"},{"text":"coral","id":"AAT11800"},{"text":"shell","id":"AAT11829"},{"text":"diamond","id":"AAT11084"},{"text":"emerald","id":"AAT11074"},{"text":"ruby","id":"AAT11082"},{"text":"lapis lazuli","id":"AAT11122"}],"techniques":[{"text":"repousse","id":"AAT54023"},{"text":"chasing","id":"AAT54016"},{"text":"gilding","id":"AAT53789"},{"text":"Filigree (metalwork)","id":"x35885"},{"text":"stone-setting","id":"x34787"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Gilt silver, brass and copper, repoussé, chased, filigree and jewelled with precious stones","categories":[{"text":"Buddhism","id":"THES48984"},{"text":"Religion","id":"THES48900"},{"text":"Ceremonial objects","id":"THES48981"},{"text":"Gemstones","id":"THES270329"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SSEA","id":"THES48598"},"images":["2021MU9492","2021MU9493","2017KC2660"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES365138"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Shrine","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Nepal","id":"x30053"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"Register notes: Newari work"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"18th century - early 19th century","earliest":"1700-01-01","latest":"1850-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Purchased from Imre Schwaiger, Esq.","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"82.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":"Without parasol"},{"dimension":"Width","value":"62.9","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Measurements converted from register.","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Purchased from Imre Schwaiger, Esq., 39 Brook Street, Grosvenor Square, W.1.
