This acquisition information reflects that found in the Museum records (Asia Department registers and/or Central Inventory) as part of a 2023 provenance research project.\r\n\r\nRP 1912-2204M\n\n-\nNote from register: Purchased by the vendor from a Lama monk (the artist) in the Great Monastery (Palk'or Choide) at Gyantse, Tibet in 1905. It is the custom in Tibet to reserve the 'Wheel of Life' subject in painting solely for monastic and temple use. It occurs in fresco-paintings on walls and very rarely on paper or on cloth. Knowing this, Captain Creagh commissioned a Gyantse monk, one of the best artists in the Great Monastery, to prepare three copies from one of the best 'Wheel of Life' wall-paintings in that Lamasery.
