BOOK OF SAMPLES of cotton fabrics used by the agricultural population of the Punjab, showing the patterns peculiar to different races.' Some of the samples appear to match textiles transferred from the India Museum's collection. Based on comparison with 7915(IS) this book of samples may have been referenced by John Forbes Watson for The Textile Manufactures of India (1866). \n\nThe book is referenced in the Official Classified and Descriptive Catalogue of the Contributions from India to the London Exhibition of 1862 (Calcutta 1862), catalogue number 3278-85, p.5-6: 'With the exception of the Delhí lace , the cotton fabrics of the Punjab are in general very coarse . The best is that of Loodianah, called Loodianah Khes, which is exported in some quantities to Lehand Chanthan , in Chinese Tartary, and a mixed cotton and silk fabric called Sûsi is made at Hoshiarpoor and at Jullunder. Bhabar, a village in the last named district, has been celebrated from ancient times for its Jhûti or cotton cloth . But the manufacturers of this place have been nearly annihilated by the import of English cloths . The cotton Loongees or scarfs of Peshawur and Huzara are also in request. In towns the cotton fabrics of Manchester are rapidly superseding those of native texture, but the peasantry for the most part clothe themselves in coarse homespun cotton cloths. Still the first thing done by a well-to-do agriculturist is to clothe himself in English cotton. A book, with samples of the coarse cotton cloths worn by the peasantry, has been included in the collection. Central Committee, Lahore.
