The mouthpiece would have been used to draw tobacco smoke through a water bowl (the huqqa base) and into the mouth via a long, flexible tube. This example was produced in Ahmedabad in Gujarat State, India in the mid- to late 19th century. The city has long been associated with the production of decorative and/or utilitarian wares from local quartz hardstones and to this day it continues to be a major gem cutting and trade centre. The mouthpiece was acquired by the Indian Museum in London and transferred to South Kensington in 1879.","physicalDescription":"A huqqa mouthpiece, now broken into two pieces with evidence of a failed repair. The first piece is a tube of wide bore with a smooth external surface and two circumferential channels at the broken end and with three at the undamaged end. The second piece is a narrow tube with a spherical form near the broken end and tapering towards a small bulge at the undamaged end. It has been fashioned in bloodstone with a green body colour with red patches and spots.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"bloodstone","id":"AAT11138"}],"techniques":[{"text":"carving","id":"AAT53149"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Bloodstone, carved and polished using abrasives, probably fashioned on a bow-driven lathe.","categories":[{"text":"Gemstones","id":"THES270329"},{"text":"Hardstone","id":"THES270137"},{"text":"Smoking accessories","id":"THES49036"},{"text":"India Museum","id":"THES286062"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SSEA","id":"THES48598"},"images":["2016JB4919"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"008","id":"THES374494"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"008","id":"THES374494"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Huqqa mouthpiece","id":""}],[{"text":"Huqqa mouthpiece","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Ahmedabad","id":"x30818"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"c. 1850","earliest":"1845-01-01","latest":"1854-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"77.8","unit":"mm","qualifier":"+/- 1.0","date":{"text":"20/07/2015","earliest":"2015-07-20","latest":"2015-07-20"},"part":"01406:1/(IS)","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"20.8 to 21.1 & 22.7 to 23.3","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"20/07/2015","earliest":"2015-07-20","latest":"2015-07-20"},"part":"01406:1/(IS)","note":"Diameter range for smooth & channelled parts at the unbroken end"},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"18.4 to 18.9 & 19.8 to 20.2","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"20/07/2015","earliest":"2015-07-20","latest":"2015-07-20"},"part":"01406:1/(IS)","note":"Diameter range for smooth & channelled parts at the broken end"},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"15.8 to 16.2","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"20/07/2015","earliest":"2015-07-20","latest":"2015-07-20"},"part":"01406:1/(IS)","note":"Internal diameter range at the unbroken end"},{"dimension":"Length","value":"71.1","unit":"mm","qualifier":"+/- 1.0","date":{"text":"20/07/2015","earliest":"2015-07-20","latest":"2015-07-20"},"part":"01406:2/(IS)","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"24.0 to 24.6","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"20/07/2015","earliest":"2015-07-20","latest":"2015-07-20"},"part":"01406:2/(IS)","note":"Diameter range of spherical section"},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"12.5 to 12.9","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"20/07/2015","earliest":"2015-07-20","latest":"2015-07-20"},"part":"01406:2/(IS)","note":"Diameter of bulge at unbroken end"},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"4.0 to 4.5","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"20/07/2015","earliest":"2015-07-20","latest":"2015-07-20"},"part":"01406:2/(IS)","note":"Internal diameter at unbroken end"}],"dimensionsNote":"Uneveness at broken end","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"The object that these parts are from, was formerly in The India Museum in London and it was then transferred to the South Kensington Museum (later renamed The Victoria & Albert Museum) in 1879.
